It has been so interesting over the years of my life to witness my experience of the metamorphosis of the woman’s voice. As a young child the mothers were all around, they were the voices in the homes, sometime strong, sometimes complaining, powerless, wise, scared, knowing. I was lucky my grandmother was a powerful yet soft woman who changed lives and initiated wonderful things – like the Psychotherapy Association of New Zealand. She was a powerful gentle trailblazer. However as I came into my early teens we lept up and down to Annie Lennox, “sisters are doing it for themselves”. “Girls can do anything” we all said and I truly felt that women were a superior breed. As critical as this period was to the liberation of the voice of women there was an aggression and manliness to it that certainly flattened the men around us, I think some of those men are still wondering how the hell to be a man and get loved by these outspoken amazons.

More recently women are returning in an integrated way; to ‘the way of the woman’. I think it is a very exciting time. It is a luxury to be liberated women and not need to fight about it anymore. To drop into that beautiful space of strength and femininity where blossoms of wisdom fall from our mouths.

In the past year I have traveled the world and been with people from China, India, South Africa, Jordan, Ecuador, Colombia the US and the UK. And the eureka moment of my year was when I realized the obvious. All anyone wants is love, and connection. I made a commitment then and there, that to the best of my ability, I will speak love into everything, I will stop being shy of saying the words or doing the gestures that express love. And interestingly, I got this insight from a man. A wonderful man in Colombia called Papa Jaimie who has rescued thousands of streets kids and is a national treasure. And who generates love all around him.

So, my wish here is that in this new age of the woman’s voice, that we be bold bearers of the one thing that binds all beings, that is the heart longing of all of us – love.
